Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions patients have about dentistry, Dental Implants, Cosmetic Dentistry, and oral health issues. If you have any other questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, we would love to hear from you.
What should I do if I have bad breath?
Bad breath (halitosis) can be unpleasant. In healthy people, the major reason is microbial deposits on the tongue. Reasons may include morning time (reduced saliva), certain foods (garlic, onions), poor oral hygiene, Periodontal Disease, dry mouth, or tobacco products.
Prevention:
- Practice good oral hygiene: brush twice a day and floss daily.
- See your dentist regularly for cleanings.
- Drink water frequently to keep the mouth moist.
- Use antiseptic mouthwash.
How often should I brush and floss?
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Plaque formation is continuous and can only be controlled by regular cleaning. Flossing is the best way to clean between teeth and under the gumline where a brush cannot reach, preventing gum disease.
Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?
According to the ADA and CDC, amalgam fillings are safe and durable. However, many patients today prefer Composite (tooth-colored) fillings or Porcelain Inlays for a more natural look. We encourage you to discuss options with us.
How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?
You should have your teeth checked and cleaned at least twice a year. Regular visits include medical history review, oral cancer screening, gum disease evaluation, and removal of plaque and tartar (calculus) to prevent cavities and periodontal disease.
How can I tell if I have gingivitis or periodontitis (gum disease)?
Many people have periodontal disease without symptoms. Signs include red and puffy gums, bleeding gums when brushing, persistent bad breath, new spacing between teeth, loose teeth, or receding gums. Regular check-ups are essential for early detection.
Why is it important to use dental floss?
Brushing removes plaque from surfaces, but only flossing cleans between the teeth and under the gumline. Daily flossing disrupts plaque colonies, preventing damage to gums, teeth, and bone.
How can cosmetic dentistry help improve my smile?
Cosmetic Dentistry can drastically improve your smile. Procedures include:
- Teeth Whitening: Lightens stained teeth.
- Composite Fillings: Tooth-colored repair for cavities or chips.
- Porcelain Veneers: Custom shells to cover fronts of teeth.
- Dental Implants: To replace missing teeth.
- Orthodontics: To straighten teeth.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain Veneers are very thin shells of tooth-shaped porcelain individually crafted to cover the fronts of teeth. They are durable, stain-resistant, and perfect for fixing discolored, chipped, or slightly crooked teeth.
What can I do about stained or discolored teeth?
Professional Teeth Whitening is the most effective way to brighten your smile. We offer both in-office treatments for immediate results and custom home trays. For severe staining (like tetracycline), Veneers or Crowns might be a better option.
What are my options if I have missing teeth?
Replacing missing teeth is crucial to prevent bone atrophy and shifting teeth. Options include:
- Dental Implants: The most advanced solution. Artificial roots placed in the jaw to support crowns or dentures. Highly stable and aesthetic.
- Fixed Bridges: Non-removable appliances anchored to adjacent teeth.
- Dentures: Removable replacements for missing teeth.
What can be done about old or attractive fillings?
Old silver fillings can be replaced with Composite (bonding) fillings that match your tooth color, or Porcelain Inlays/Onlays for larger restorations. If a tooth is heavily damaged, a Crown may be recommended.
Is there a correlation between heart disease and periodontal disease?
Yes, studies suggest a link. Periodontal bacteria can enter the bloodstream and may contribute to heart disease, stroke, and complications with diabetes. Treating gum disease is good for your overall health.
Why straighten teeth?
Straight teeth function better and are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay and periodontal disease. Crooked teeth can also cause TMJ pain and uneven wear. We offer orthodontic solutions to improve both health and aesthetics.
